People’s environmental attitudes
Why we monitor people's environmental attitudes
The Your Environment - What Matters Survey measures the environmental attitudes of Waikato residents using the New Environmental Paradigm (NEP) scale. This measure indicates the spread of basic ecological beliefs across 3 categories, pro-ecological, mid-ecological and anti-ecological in the survey sample.
Basic ecological beliefs have a strong relationship to people’s awareness of environmental problems, their support for efforts to solve them and their willingness to contribute to their solution. This indicator helps us understand the level of support for proposed actions, policies, and rules to protect the environment.
Since the benchmark survey in 1998 this indicator has been monitored in eight surveys.
Results - data and trends
In 2022, 27 per cent of those surveyed were rated pro-ecological. This compares with 40 per cent in 2019, which was the highest since monitoring began in 2000.
The proportion of those rated mid-ecological in 2022 increased to 56 per cent from 47 per cent in 2019.
The proportion of those rated anti-ecological in 2022 increased to 18 per cent from 13 per cent in 2019.
The average regional NEP scale score was 22.2 in 2022, 23.4 in 2019 and 22.5 in 2016.
