Risk mitigation plans

The Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA) and the Civil Defence Emergency Management Act 2002 give regional councils responsibilities in preparing and implementing natural hazard risk mitigation plans. These plans aim to minimise the effect of natural hazards on the region's economy and communities.

Each risk mitigation plan is hazard specific, and defines the role of Waikato Regional Council, and local district councils and communities  in managing and reducing the effects of the hazard.

Our natural hazard mitigation plans are currently under review

We have natural hazard risk mitigation plans for flooding, earthquake, volcanic action, coastal erosion and water shortage events.

These plans are all currently under review, and are unavailable during this review process. If you would like to enquire further about them, please contact the Regional Resilience Team on 0800 800 401.

In the meantime if you are concerned about what to do in a natural hazard event, we do have other resources to assist you such, as the Waikato Regional Hazards Portal and the Waikato Civil Defence website. See the links on this page.
