Why we monitor people's satisfaction with the environment
Waikato Regional Council monitors people’s levels of satisfaction with their local environment at the regional and territorial authority levels.
People’s level of satisfaction with their local environment is useful for placing people’s levels of concern about environmental issues in local context.
Results - data and trends
In 2022, people’s level of satisfaction with their environment was 6.1 out of 10, where 10 is perfect in every way. This is higher than the average in 2019 of 5.7. In 2016 it was 6.6. In 2013 the average was 6.47, similar to the scores of 6.5 in 1998, 6.42 in 2000, 6.32 in 2003 and 6.28 in 2006.
In 2022, 1,026 people throughout the region responded to the survey rating their levels of satisfaction with their local environments. This question has been included in all surveys since 1998.
- Across all surveys, the most common score and the median (or middle score) were seven. The exceptions were 2019 and 2022 where the median was 6.
- In 2022 most people (80 per cent) were moderately (59 per cent) or highly satisfied (21 per cent) with their environment.
- In 2022, 16 per cent of people were not satisfied with their environment, this compares with 25 per cent in 2019. In past years (1998-2016) scores ranged from 8–11 per cent for this measure.
