Why we monitor people's personal environmental actions

Waikato Regional Council needs to understand the types of activities people are undertaking in their daily lives that benefit the environment. This can assist council when designing environmental campaigns and education programmes to support activities that benefit the environment.

This indicator monitors the personal actions people undertake to protect the environment (types of activities).

Results - data and trends

In 2022, 1,026 people throughout the region told us what personal actions they were taking to protect the environment.

In 2022, 93 per cent of people reported some type of action to protect the environment. In 2019, 92 per cent took some action,, 95 per cent in 2016 and 89 per cent in 2013. In 2003, 83 per cent of people were regularly undertaking actions to protect the environment.This remained stable in 2006 at 82 per cent. Whereas in 1998 just 55 per cent of people undertook activities in the previous year in order to protect the environment.

The main personal actions reported in 2022 were recycling, planting trees, composting, bus use, reduced rubbish/waste and reduced packaging/less plastic.
