Flood Risk Assessment Report

The Thames Coast River Flood Risk Assessment Report details river flooding risks associated with the Thames coast area. The report is part of the Thames Coast Project. It focuses on five communities in the area - Tararu, Te Puru, Waiomu/Pohue, Tapu and Coromandel town.

At the request of Waikato Regional Council and the Thames-Coromandel District Council, URS New Zealand Limited carried out a detailed assessment of the river flooding risks along the Thames Coast. This assessment:

  • estimates the risk to life from a 100 year flood event at Tararu, Tapu, Waiomu-Pohue, Te Puru and Coromandel Town against international guidelines
  • prioritises the risks to assist in the development of a flood management plan
  • determines the benefits from proposed risk mitigation works.

The Thames Coast Project Flood Risk Assessment Report aims toreview background information and determine the risk to life and further financial risks. The report recommends risk mitigation to reduce risks to tolerable levels and evaluates the financial costs of the risk mitigation in the five community towns on the Thames Coast.

Thames coast flood risk assessment report

This section contains a table of contents, executive summary and presents a broad introduction to the report and explains its purpose.

Background, methodology and risk assessment

These sections provide a brief discussion on the reasons why this report has been produced and summarise some of the previous flood management work that sets the context for the risk assessment. An explanation is also given on how the risk assessment was undertaken (methodology) along with details of the consequence (impact) analysis and risk calculation results.

Further information including a discussion on some of the key assumptions and input data for the risk modelling (together with a general discussion on risk criteria and how they apply to this study) are presented in appendices A, B C and D below.

Risk assessment results, conclusions and recommendations, limitations and references

In these sections you can view the results of the risk assessment including the lives risk and financial risk profiles, individual risk estimates, comparison of the risk estimates with lives risk criteria and the costs of risk mitigation works.

The Conclusions and Recommendations features a summary of the outcomes of the risk assessment project, while the Limitations section details any limitations which may affect these outcomes.
