Policy and planning. It's what we do.

Regional councils develop policies and plans to manage natural and physical resources within their regions.
  • Regional councils develop policies and plans to manage natural and physical resources within their regions.

Our Regional Policy Statement sets the broad direction and framework for resource management within the Waikato region. It provides an overview of the region's resource management issues and how integrated management will be achieved through district and city council plans and this council’s regional plans. Our regional plans address specific resource management issues in the environment, like the coast, soil, water, or air, and set out how to manage activities impacting these resources.

We work with territorial authorities by making submissions to their district plans, helping to ensure alignment with the Waikato Regional Policy Statement. We also submit on central government initiatives and reforms which inform our own policy and planning work, and which may also impact the activities of this council.

We provide support for and initiate thinking on emerging issues, advocating our position and progressing key projects, for example, the development of a Regional Spatial Strategy, a Water Security Management Plan and a Regional Biodiversity Strategy, all work currently underway.

What else do we do?

Improving water quality, enhancing the health of our coastal and marine ecosystems, protecting and restoring our unique native plants and animals and the ecosystems they live in, keeping people safe on our roads and waterways as well as from floods and other hazards, and providing passenger transport services.

We do all this, and more.
