Island Block fish passage pumps

Funded: $1.68m
Total cost: $3.7m
Project starts: 2024/25
Project ends: 2026/27

Island Block pump station, which is an aged asset within the lower Waikato catchment, is being upgraded to increase pumping capacity. One new fish-friendly Archimedes screw pump, the likes of which have also been installed at the Mangawhero and Churchill East pump stations, will replace up to two flood pumps built in the 1960s. The upgrade will meet national guidelines for fish passage and improved provision for climate change.

Status update:

  • Concept design near completion.
  • Site enabling works to be completed this summer.
  • Procurement of pump is expected late 2024/25 FY.
  • Procurement of construction service expected for tender early 2025/26 FY, for works to start in October 2025.
